Selective Schools have proven again that they are the top-ranking schools in the HSC results. For many parents, it is THE school they want their child to be in. And with good reason!

Below is a table that shows the state top-scoring schools in the HSC results.

Here are some points that worth noting.

  • The top five schools are state selective schools.
  • In the 20 schools, 12 of them are selective state schools, the rest are private (high-cost schools).
  • This top performance of selective school is consistent over the years.

Performance is not an issue once students are in selective school. The issue, as many parents know, is getting into a selective school.

Many parents are not aware of what the entry mark for selective school is made of. Here is a table to explain it.

  • Schools provide the school assessment scores out of 100 in English and Maths, based generally on the student’s performance in Year 4 and up to mid-year of Year 5.
  • Students’ school marks account for one-third of their score out of 300.
  • The school assessment scores for English and Mathematics rank all candidates from a particular school applying for selective high school placement in order of merit, showing the relative gaps between the students.

For each test component, the test score is scaled to a mean of 60 and a standard deviation of 12. In other words, the average score correct out of 45 for Reading is scaled to 60 out of 100 and all other scores are calculated relative to that score of 60.
