Year 6 is the transition year to high school. Students need to be empowered with great fundamental knowledge and skills in both Maths and English. They also need to start high school as independent learners, know how to plan, study and analyse their tasks. With GEA’s approach of creating independent learners, students are set for success in high school. When students understand maths and English, they develop high self-esteem and become more confident. When they know how to set goals, plan and achieve, the process of learning becomes stress-free and joyful. With GEA guidance and expertise, year 6 students become more assured and start high school with high self-image.

Literacy

A key focus for Level 6 is the provision of a wide range of quality literature-based texts that promote greater appreciation of what quality literature is, and encourages the students to delve deeper into their own genres of preference when reading and creating texts for leisure and study.

This course also includes a highly specialised instructional unit on applying comprehension skills in a range of different formats for class purposes as well as internal and external assessment purposes.

It provides extension opportunities for capable students to explore the realms of more sophisticated and complex vocabulary, as well as offering the students essential practice in all of the targeted literacy skills that equip them well in high school.

Course Structure

The course is structured for 4 terms of 10 weeks each. Students attend a 2-hour class once a week.

Each term students receive a GEA book that is mapped to the syllabus and based on Cognitive Load Theory.

In week 9 of each term students are assessed to measure their progress. Full feedback is given to students. Parents receive a comprehensive report for their child’s progress. Week 10 is the consolidation week.

Numeracy

This course opens the door to advanced learning in all areas of mathematics. It provides extension opportunities for capable students to explore more complex concepts in mathematics and more advanced problem solving skills. It equips them exceptionally well for the demand of high school.

The Year 6 program is excellent for preparing students for NAPLAN. Year 7 NAPLAN assesses the three main literacy areas Reading Comprehension, Language Conventions and Writing. All these subjects are covered in the English course. NAPLAN also assesses Numeracy (Concepts, strategies and Problem Solving) that are covered in our Maths course.
