Give them the future they deserve

Global Education Academy provides tutoring to Year 5 students in literacy and numeracy.

What makes our program successful

  • The only research-based learning centre (Cognitive Load Theory)
  • Program developed by the founder – Dr Majeda Awawdeh (previously managed  ICAS exams at UNSW)
  • Fully qualified educators with many years’ experience
  • Specialised small groups

This is the beginning of stage 3, the last stage in primary school. Year 5 is quite critical as students start to shape the high school student they will become. They need to start developing the right habits to cope and excel. If your child has a positive attitude to learning they are more likely to complete Year 12 with good marks and go onto further study. GEA sets them on the right pathway.

Common things children say when they lack confidence and dis-engagement could include: “I don’t know how to do that”, “I can’t remember”, “It’s too hard”, “It’s boring”. Our programs are written based on Cognitive Load Theory. They are designed to target misconceptions in mathematics and English. Students become more aware of their misconceptions, they learn that making mistakes is sometimes the best way to learn. We re-engage students, raise their spirits and their belief in themselves.

Literacy

The English program includes four components:

Reading –  oral and silent reading strategies, reading fluency.

Reading Comprehension – an advanced reading and reading comprehension course for students to assist them to gain the necessary skills and competencies for high school. This course includes targeted instruction in developing comprehension skills across the curriculum.

Writing –  an advanced writing course for students to fully understand all the different text types, their purposes and structures, and to create a range of texts with confidence and proficiency. Introducing marking criteria so students know how a piece of writing is judged.

Language Conventions – a course specifically designed to promote a range of spelling and grammar strategies to ensure students develop competencies in these key literacy areas

Course  Structure

The course is structured for 4 terms of 10 weeks each. Students attend a 2-hour class once a week.

Each term students receive a GEA book that is mapped to the syllabus and based on Cognitive Load Theory.

In week 9 of each term students are assessed to measure their progress. Full feedback is given to students. Parents receive a comprehensive report for their child’s progress. Week 10 is the consolidation week.

Numeracy

All maths programs at GEA include three main components:

  • Concepts
  • Strategies
  • Problem Solving

The focus in this level is on conceptual understanding of stage 3 concepts; numbers, fractions, measurement, space, chance and data. Students learn using our carefully-written books that teach the concepts in a way that enable schemas acquisition. Students thoroughly investigate mathematical concepts and are empowered by various mathematical strategies. In problem solving, students use our UPSL TM  strategy (Understand, Plan, Solve and Learn) to solve word problems .

Course Structure

The course is based on a Learning Continuum k-6. The programs for Year 5 is structured for 4 terms of 10 weeks each.

The Year 5 program is an excellent program for NAPLAN. NAPLAN assesses the three main literacy areas Reading Comprehension, Language Conventions and Writing. All these subjects are covered in the English course. NAPLAN also assesses Numeracy (Concepts, strategies and Problem Solving) that are covered in our Maths course.

If your child is advanced, this is the time to prepare them for the selective school entrance test and/or academic scholarship for private schools. Click here for the program
